Local musicians John Allred and Jesse Wride will perform at a benefit concert March 26 at Utah Valley University to raise money for the non-profit foundation Nurture the Creative Mind. The concert will also kick off UVolunteer Week, a week during which daily student-organized service projects take place.

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Grande Ballroom of the Sorensen Student Center. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Campus Connection in the Sorensen Student Center for $6 with a UVID card, or $8 without. Tickets the night of the concert are $10. UVU’s Volunteer and Service-Learning Center, UV Mentors, the UVU Service Council and UVUSA are presenting the benefit concert.

Other student events during UVolunteer Week during which the Student Service Council works with clubs and organizations on campus to provide a week of service activities are a blood drive, Habitat for Humanity of Utah County build days and on-campus volunteer opportunities.

“This is a great way for students to take a few minutes out of their schedule and give back to their UVU and Utah County communities,” said Alexis Palmer, director of the UVU Volunteer & Service-Learning Center.
Nurture the Creative Mind is a non-profit foundation that uses students’ existing interests in music as a vehicle to promote learning and growth. All proceeds from the concert benefit the foundation.

“Nurture the Creative mind is a direct link for us, as students to get involved in the younger generations,” said Victoria Carlton, service team leader, UVU Mentor Program. “These donations will open up the link for UVU to partner with this organization and give students the opportunity to volunteer their talents and time in mentoring these students in nurturing their creative minds.”

Allred is a rising singer/songwriter who performs around the country in clubs and on college campuses to promote his 2010 album “All We Are.” Wride is the front man, vocalist and pianist for the Utah-based band j.wride, a group that also performs mainly for college crowds and in smaller venues.

Also performing will be the winner of UVenue, a UVU Student Association sponsored battle-of-the-bands contest. The winner of the four-round, eight-band competition will be announced at the finals on March 23.
“The performers in this competition are all UVU students who showcase our school’s musical talent. It’s exciting to have the winner perform at this benefit concert,” said Cori Fox, UVUSA fine arts chair.
